A social issue is a problem that affects the people living within a society. Humans have a lot of differences, and this can cause new issues. Social issues are common problems in the society, and we strive to solve them. Of course, most of the problems that affect societal peace and stability can be solved, but it takes a conscious and dedicated effort to see that this is achieved.
As much as social issues should be solved, there are different schools of thought on which ones are to be prioritized over the others. Some people believe that certain things affect the society more urgently than some others, this may be true, but how do we determine this? This idea and debate of what is more important than another depends on the individuals and the societies in question.
Social stratification
This is the classification of people in a society into certain groups or strata depending on certain factors like: occupation and the income earned, wealth and social status, or derived power.
These strata are lower class, middle class and upper class. All these classes contain people classified into them, based on the above.
Economic issues
Unemployment in a country affects the people and this is under the class of an economic issue. Poverty levels are a direct consequence of unemployment mostly. Different countries have different unemployment rates and unemployment rates vary by the region, gender, the educational qualifications, and the ethnic group.
Social disorganization
This is the classification of people in a society into certain groups or strata depending on certain factors like: occupation and the income earned, wealth and social status, or derived power.
These strata are lower class, middle class and upper class. All these classes contain people classified into them, based on the above.
Public health
Health conditions that are in an epidemic or pandemic fashion can distort the pattern of growth of a society, and hence, pose an issue. They can harm the quality of life, the ability of the people to work which in turn affects the economy negatively, and sadly ultimately lead to death.
Age and the life course
At every age, there is a challenge; it’s either you are too young for certain opportunities or too old for some. This means there will always be age discrimination affecting some people at any particular time.
Society always want to see a particular age at a particular place; all ages are not acceptable for every opportunity in life.
Social inequality
This arises when a person is given an unequal chance negatively as opposed to others due to gender, race, disability and age. A person or group of people are treated differently because of their difference from other people.
Work and occupations
There are issues that arise in workplaces and can be a problem to individuals. These include occupational stress, theft, sexual harassment, wage inequality, gender inequality, racial inequality, health care disparities, and a lot of other things.
Workers may also face harassment, bullying, low motivation and job satisfaction, or even performance issues.
The workplace can come with a lot of issues that challenge an individual’s social life.
Abortion
Abortion is a much-debated topic especially in most developed countries. There is the group that believes a woman should have the right of deciding whether to keep a child or terminate the pregnancy, and there is the group that emphasizes the right of the embryo or fetus to have a chance of becoming a child born into the world.
These and many other issues arise in the society as we tend to have different opinions and practices that don’t always agree with that of others.
We will be looking at solutions that try to amend these issues. We will discuss pressing issues that could be remedied.
On this blog we will be talking about these problems that we are faced with, and the methods people can adopt in combating these issues.
Issues are meant to be resolved, and it is one of the gifts that God has given man; the ability to dialog over issues that look cumbersome, and come out with ideas to solve them.
